江戸切子
The first Edo Kiriko, or Japanese traditional cut glass originated in the Edo period, was believed to have been made by Kyubei Kagaya, master glass craftsman in Odenma-cho, Edo or old Tokyo, in the late Edo period. (The Edo period is a perod of Japanese history, running from 1603 to 1868.) Edo Kiriko was created and nurtured by the townsmen of Edo. Since then, for over 160 years, its excellent designs and finest techniques have been handed down to generations of Kiriko craftsmen. Many basic patterns used by artisans during the Edo period have survived and Edo Kiriko still is very popular among Japanese people.

Introducing new and innovative combination of traditional Kiriko patterns, blended with modern sense, Kagami Crystal has being offering Edo Kiriko of modern day Japan. Today masters of Japanese traditional crafts (special designation certified by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry) practice their long-established glass cutting techniques at our studio.
江戸切子

Nanako, or fish scales.
Rokkaku Kagome, or hexagonal basket weave.
Hakkaku Kagome, or octagonal basket weave.
Kiku Tunagi, or chrysanthemum flowers.
魚子(ななこ) 六角籠目(ろっかくかごめ) 八角籠目(はっかくかごめ) 菊つなぎ(きくつなぎ)
The name is derived from the way light reflects on facets of Kiriko to give the appearance of fish scales shining in the ocean. This pattern mimics the hexagonal shapes seen in the mesh of a bamboo basket. A cut line looks like octagon-shaped mesh of a bamboo basket. A series of interlaced cut lines as of chrysanthemum flowers blooming in a row.

Asanoha, or hemp leaves.
Yarai, or bamboo fence.
Shippo or seven treasures.
Hoshi, or stars.
麻の葉(あさのは) 矢来(やらい) 七宝(しっぽう) 星(ほし)
Sharp geometric lines created on carved glass look like leaves of hemp. This is one of the most popular traditional patterns used not only for glass but also in the traditional Japanese Kimono garment. The name comes from showers of arrows or bamboo fences with bamboo braided like arrows. This is a continuous pattern with oval shapes connected with each other. It is one of the oldest patterns. It is also called "Hachigiku" or eight chrysanthemums. The lines on the glass carved diagonally look like stars.
